Outdrive serial number?

Where to find? It is a Merc 1 circa 1976. There is a label on the back surface of the upper gearcase that has a box for a serial number but the number is AWOL. The label on the motor had an easy to read imprinted serial number.

I just want to have these numbers on hand as it appears that there are often variations, by serial number, within the 888 package range.

The number should be stamped under the decal on the left side of the drive.

Thanks Don, I will look in those locations. Hope I won't have to scrape the decal off on the side of the drive.

hope ya don't. but here's how i ended up finding mine...

that's a 72' 1 drive.... sticker scraped off to see the sn.....
