I Have a 97 Volvo Penta 4.3GLPLKD with an SX-C1 1.85 Outdrive, Product #3858455. It moves up and down with no problem. But after raising, it slowly falls all the way back down. I think it's one of three things. The motor, the pump or
the cyinders. How can I check to see which one it is?

You need 2 things to check it out, the service manual (download it HERE) And the test gauge shown in the manual. Starting on page 7-16

Re: Outdrive Slowly Drops

I looked into getting the tester that Don found in the manual.
However it's more expensive($450+) than a new motor with pump.
Any ideas about how to check pump/motor other than buying
the expensive test equipment? Or is there test equipment I can
use that's less expensive?

We bought all the tools in 1995 after I went to the Volvo drive tech school, so I had those kinds of tools available. Never had to try to make my own.

Re: Outdrive Slowly Drops

I did some research and found a rebuild kit for the pump. Since I see no leakage on the cylinders and the motor is working fine I'm thinking it's the check valve in the pump. So, I'm going to get the rebuild kit and see if that does it. It's not expensive so I'm OK with giving it a try. Considering the cost of a completely new pump/motor combo ($450 +-). I'll post an update after the fact. Thanks Don S. for your help.

If a trim cylinder is leaking internally, you won't see it. Just so you know.

OK, Thanks Don S. I will keep that in mind. A rebuild kit for cylinders is also very inexpensive(compared to new Pump/motor), so if I need to do both, not an issue. I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for being there. You are an invaluable resource for us newbees.
