How much does my outdrive weigh? I am considering removing it myself as a learning experience. I know there are threads to build a stand but I'm not sure about wrestling with something thats so heavy. I am mechanically inclined and can repair automotive and industrial machines with no problem but I have never worked on boats and don't have any lifting equipment at home.

Re: Outdrive weight

Ayuh,... About 80/ 90lbs...

I jack the trailer tongue Up to lower the drive to the ground, then rock it off...
Once off, I can get an arm around it, 'n drag it to the garage....

I removed mine and it might wiegh about 75 to 90lbs max I also do not have a stand but 2 saw horses sitting parallel to one another worked great and the perfect hieght to work on get the merc service manual before you star and read it cover to cover.

I got the merc manual on the computer and the seloc manual in print so sounds like im good to go. 90 lbs is managable.

Re: Outdrive weight

make one of the stands. ya won't regret it.
i made mine out of just some boards i had laying around. mine's probably the uglyist too, maybe not even properly made. oh well.

ugly or not, what it does though is take the load. ya just have the stand level with whatever height the drive is at and slide it off onto the stand. i remove my drive and put it back by myself. it makes that much difference...

agree w/ others on the weight. it's heavy and awkward to handle.

Re: Outdrive weight

I've got an old furniture dolly that mine rolls around on.
I think harbor freight has a smokin' deal on them.
You could probably make a decent one with some scrap 2x4's or 2x6's, and some castor wheels.

Re: Outdrive weight

Any assistant would be nice, As you pull it out the drive shaft will drop, they dont like to lean against a wall. Yeah carrying it from point A to point B isnt that bad. Its setting it down and stuff thats the btch.
FOR SURE its nice to have a helper when you re-install it....ecpecially your 1st time...

I have to agree with the assistant on re-install for the 1st time it's a chore. but the next time I do mine I will be modifying a old shopping cart with the cage cut off as a adjustable stand I have pics come spring time.

I'm fixin to pull my outdrive to do a motor swap...
Is there a "prefer" position to store the outdrive.

Mine will be empty(drained) and prop less...can I just lay it on its side?

Re: Outdrive weight

I removed mine by myself. It was a little awkward, until I found the appropriate places to put my hands.
It would certainly have helped to have a helper. I had a friend reseal it, and I helped him put it on, with him doing most of the work!

I did print out plans from this forum for a stand.

I wouldn't want to drop it on my toe.:p. It is heavy.. I reinstall the shaft for the trim cylinders to use as a handle to carry mine into the shop..

Go to the Adults Only section in this forum and in there you will see a post on all kinds of homemade outdrive stands.

Excellent suggestion! Gonna try that next time. I leave that part on the cylinders. Kinda of a "Duh" thing after you think it thru.

Re: Outdrive weight

Photos of wooden and metal stands are all over the forums. It's relatively easy for you to build one, or you can buy one through eBay or other sites. I had one for my Alpha drive and recently build one for my Bravo III drive. Now that's a heavy one - about 140 pounds with the props. I can't lift that; used a come-along to pull it. Used a piece of plywood as a ramp and the come-along to pull it into my trunk to get it home! (photos on Chaparral Owners Forum; search "Lady M" ) I'll have to have help getting it back on in the spring. Servicing is easy and straight-foward. Get the correct oil/grease for your drive. Think spring. Hy
