Outdrive will not go up or down

88 Bayliner, 5.0 engine, checked the fuses, all OK. Checked the connectors, all good. Only get the clicking of the relays when I try to raise it up or down.

Had this problem before, disconnected the battery to work on it, found nothing wrong, hooked the battery back up and it worked. Tried that again, no go.

Ayuh,.... Did you just Look at 'em,..??
Or did ya remove each 1, sand it to clean metal, 'n reinstall 'em,..??
Ditto the battery connections...

Yes, I removed them, checked them with a VOM, cleaned them with a wire wheel on a Dremel tool, outside and inside, (two different rotary tools) applied anti-corrosive grease, and re-installed. Same for battery, removed, cleaned with wire brush, applied same grease, and re-attached. As for battery, it is up, (battery tender) engine even cranks up and runs. As to engine running making any difference, no. In other posts I've read of a limit switch, does it have one and if yes, where is it?

Ayuh,... Will the motor turn when directly jumpered to the battery,..??

If not, I'd suspect the motor is junk...

The biggest problem with my outdrive not going up and down was a poor ground,just a suggestion you might want to look into.

you can try tapping the side of the pump motor with a wrench. If that makes it operate, you need a new motor or need to fix yours (motor shop), but it might get your drive where you need it for now.

You hit the nail on the head. I tapped on the side of the motor and it worked. With that known, what are the usual problems with the motor.

Being as we live at least 30 minutes from anywhere you need to be, finding someone to repair the motor or finding someplace to get a new motor will be a challenge. Let me see if I can get a part number, then someone might be able to suggest a source. As for my location, just off I-20, mid-way between Atlanta and Augusta in Georgia.

OK, found the part number, 984356, a three wire trim motor. Best price on eBay is $129.00 plus shipping. Anyone know where there is one at a better price?

I see you have solved the mystery of your problem. Recently I had a similiar situation to trouble shoot. I read this article, which helped me a lot. The other option was already mentioned, take it to a motor repair shop and have them replace the windings.

Amazing what you can find when you really look. I found both options, a bunch of new ones (mostly on internet) and also a motor repair shop in a nearby city. I ended up taking the faster route, replace with a new motor. Since you stated it would most likely be the windings, that affirmed the thought to just replace the motor.

Now for anyone else who experiences this, the trim motor has stopped 3 more times since I started this thread. Every time I just go back and tap on it and once again it will work for a few times. Last time I just hit it with my fist.

Now that I've got the new trim motor installed and all working as designed, I took the time to take the old one apart and quickly found the problem. Electrical corrosion that had come off parts and become powder fine. This caused one brush to stick, thus when it was not making contact, I could tap on the motor and once again it would work. Other than that, there is one wire that looks to be very corroded (maybe the source of most of that powder) but it is still making the circuit complete. I hope I can clean out that one sticking brush, re-assemble, and then have a backup trim motor. As to how much of this powder and corrosion did I get out, well over a teaspoon.
