Removed tilt cyl.'s and 6 mounting nuts! I think it's the spine shaft rusted on? Came out about 3/8 inch or so! Any tricks? Used pry bar a little, didn't want to damage the gasket surface, and shook the heck out of it even with a piece of 2x4 between collar and drive! Should i remove the collar allen bolts? Thanks for any tips!

No place to do that on a Cobra drive, they are flat across the top. Nothing that the 2by can push against.

Use prybar with a tough rubber to protect the surface (not a soft rubber). My gimbal bearing was rusted to the shaft.

Did you make sure your control is shifted into full forward?

The gear position doesnt really matter. You just have to find a way to pull it straight back. And hope nothing breaks. Watch how you pry. One slip can really make a mess.

I agree, it is not going to prevent the drive from coming off on a cobra.

Re: Outdrive won't come off!!!

tried about everything, didn;t try the tilt/trim idea yet! no place for the 2x4, but have enough room, about 1/4 inch in the top where the unit is backed off,,, so maybe if i keep shimming up there and use the trim pistons, it will be enough!! worth a try, two omc shops tell me it has to come off and there is no other way,,, even if you have to destroy it!! thanks for the idea!

Just make sure it isnt binding on the studs. Probably wouldnt hurt to take the studs off if you can. I might give you a little more room the wiggle things. Can you push it back up tight against the gasket easily?

Re: Outdrive won't come off!!!

Thanks,,tried the wd40 PUTTING in the best i could, a whole can. Then pull in with the nuts and remove again with no luck! Read more on iNstallation and use of the pilot spline shaft tool to line up THINGS! I BOUGHT the boat as an unfinished attempt at restoration,, the motor isn't mounted yet,,,,maybe the motor is binding the shaft? Have to get some help,, and try moving the motor at the same time!! DON'T THINK IT IS THE STUDS AND WOULD BE TOUGH TO GET OUT.

What do you mean the motor isn't mounted yet? Is there a motor in there or not?

Re: Outdrive won't come off!!!

yes the motor is in the boat, but for what ever reason, the previous owner had taken the two rear nuts off near the steering and the 2 bolts that go down in the boat, on the motor mounts! so you can lift up on the front of motor and shift it left and right! i think it was an attemp to get the vertical drive off! he told me a dealer replaced something between the motor and transom and because of cost he installed the drive, so it was done last summer! I think because the shift cable/ shifter is frozen when i got it, and he already tried to remove and couldn't!! I just love trying to get the truth out of these kind of sellers,,desperate!! thanks in advance larry!

When you are pushing and pulling on the outdrive does the engine seem to be moving also? Give us some pictures if possible. It may help. You never know.

Re: Outdrive won't come off!!!

no it doesn't seem it. not sure if it is binding it or not. thanks so much, i don't want to destroy a perfectly good drive! I will send some pictures, i'll take this afternoon and try to figure out how to post! the picture of the outdrive on this post above is the same as mine! the boat, motor and outdrive look perfect, no signs of saltwaater or wear or leaks or rust in the drive! the motor is in place with the rear mount nuts off and the front mounts are unscrewed from the boat floor! everything else is connected! its just that the motor can move and so wasn;t sure if that could hold the spline shaft on the drive from coming off. would it be worth a try removing the motor, even though the outdrive won't come off and get the outdrive to let go that way?

Ayuh,... Yes, it can be binding in the coupler on the motor...

Especially if it weren't Greased....
