Trim/Tilt worked fine in the lake. Pulled up on the trailer, turned it off and it took severel minutes for the outdrive to raise enough to get the boat out of the water. Didn't work on land either. Sounds like it works, pump motor sounds normal, no wierd clicks or anything. It lowered back down without problem, just won't go back up. 1976 Tide Craft. Mercruiser 165 HP straight 6. Mercruiser outdrive.

Some of the older 165 drives have a reverse lock, put the shift into fwd and try to tilt it if it tilts the rev. lock needs adjustment

I had a 74 165 with the same symptom. It's hard to tell whether the pump or motor is bad without pressure guages. Mine had flow and the trim cylinders were not bound up. Replaced with Arco unit. No longer needed the anti reverse valve because a extra valve is in the pump. Also had a problem once on a 72 Mercruiser with mineral deposits around the seal where the shaft enters the cylinder. WD40 took care of that. By the way that Arco pump was over 500 bucks several years ago. Good luck.

Thanks a million. Was the fluid. A pint of 30 weight and she lifts like a trooper. You never seen someone grin so hard about a leak! but now will trace the leak down. Thanks again.

Glad your initial fix solved the problem short term. But ya need to find the leak, if oil can get out, water can get in and water and hydraulic systems don't mix.
