I'm working on a 1968 Mark Twain with a 160 MerCruiser (250 ci straight 6) and I know I at least need to do the shift boot as it is cracked and is leaking, but I'm trying decide if I should redo all the boots and bimbal bearing or just the shift boot.

I plan on doing it myself, and have already rebuilt the engine and put in a new floor on the boat, but am not sure if there's any special tools or knowledge needed to get this project done. Can I do the shift boot without taking everything apart?

I'm also looking for a digital copy for the Merc service manual that I can download. I believe I believe I'm looking for service manual #1. I currently have a Clymer's and a Sealoc manual but am not very satisfied with them.

Thanks for the help, and happy winterizing

Looks like your doing a great restoration and I would replace all boots not just the shift one. With the shift boot leaking it is only a matter of time before the others do. Go to the Adults only section at the top and get into the Merc section. In this area you can find all the info and tools needed to do the repair.

You would use service manual number one and can be found here but it is not downloadable, but you may know this already
Boatinfo - The library, containing manuals, brochures and other technical documents from the last hundred years!

Thanks AllDodge

I've poked around in there before, and have my manual bookmarked. Any idea where I might be able to find a downloadable copy?
