Outdrive

Ok like i have said i am new to boats and i dont have all the tools to start it on land yet. my question is does the engine have to be running for the outdrive to move up and down? When i hit the switch i hear it click but then nothing it is an OMC outdrive. another question does anyone have sugestions on what i shoud do as a new boat owner i am looking for a service manual for my 1976 formula thunderbird with an omc drive please let me know.

Normally, NO. But who knows how your boat is wired, or what kind of drive you have.
It is normal to have the ignition key in the run position (engine not running) on some setups.

Yea, some need the ignition switch in the run position to move it up and down, but not running. Put the drive down before starting.
