outer prop shaft seal

I spoke with the mechanic at the marina about replacing this seal, quoted me around $600. That's kind of a shock to the season and would like to attempt replacement on my own. After looking at the manual, it shows taking the shaft out... is this a necessary step or can i replace the seal with the shaft in the drive ? AQ211a with 280 DP drive. Thanks

From the picture Scott, it looks like you could pick the seal out easy enough. I have even drilled hole in seals, then used grabber screws and vice grips to pull them out. I think a lot will depend on the condition of the shaft also. The seal needs a very good surface to ride on.Then you might be able use a pipe to tap the new seal back in. What are you out if you can't, seals are cheap. I would get the OEM seal it might have a double lip. Also are you sure you have the right prop and correct washers, the housing looks a chewed up? And maybe the splines on the shaft are to large for the seal to fit over. I can't see from your picture. Good luck Dave-R

You are correct about the scaring. I was given the boat from my Dad and I know he had prop work done a few seasons ago, and when I removed everything this year, this is what I found. Seal first, then the spacers... Diagrams that I have found look the same as the way all the spacers came off. Thanks

Was there water in the oil? I would replace the the inner shaft seals while I was at it. Refresh my memory, isn't there 2 seals per shaft,right next
to each other, maybe back to back so they seal from both directions? Or am I thinking of something else

Thanks guys ! Dave, I think it may be the wrong prop, i have a brand new one and it's not the same as the one that was on it, so I'm going to do some homework. K2, yes, 2 seals and no water in the oil... all the damage was to the outside of the seal, everything was as it should be inside... old seals were very brittle when I pulled them out. Thanks again !!

That damage is not from wrong prop. That damage is from no thrust washer (sometime call line cutter) before the inner prop. BTW ... outer seal keeps water out of the drive and the inner seal keeps oil in. Four seals in total...2 inner shaft 2 outer shaft
