Over Charging?

On my 50HP Mariner (mounted on a pontoon) the volt meter pegs out at 16 volts at above half throttle. Once it's up there lowering throttle won't drop the reading. If I turn all the running lights on it will drop to just over 14 volts. It doesn't cook the water out of the battery though.
Battery is only a year old. What's to look at? :(

Re: Over Charging?

Had a similar problem on my 87' 150. High volt readings on volt gauge and all my electroics.

Replaced the volatage regulator and problem was gone. But it cost me $140 for the part - yikes!. But is was a VERY simple fix.

Good luck

WHERE IS THE REGULATOR LOCATED, I THOUGHT THERE IS ONLY A RECTIFIER.

I don't think you have a voltage regulator... Probably a bad rectifier....
I really need your serial number to confirm...

Re: Over Charging?

Its not a bad rectifier since its charging the battery. Sorry but you dont have a voltage regulator on that one. Your going to have to load up the system by turning on some stuff. You can get a add on voltage regulator/rectifier if you like. But most people just load the system up.

Trent, what else would overcharge the system? Stator?

Re: Over Charging?

Ihave the same problem, 16 volts, but since there is no regulator there really is nothing to stop it. It does nt seem to hurt anything, and other posts I have read seem to think that since these unregulated systems are fairly low amps it doesn't really matter. The mechanic at the dealer said if it doesnt boil the water out of the battery he doesnt worry about it.

Re: Over Charging?

KCLOST........ Actually he has no problem (well he does) Its the nature of the beast. They should have installed a REGULATOR and not just a rectifier. All a rectifier does is convert AC power from the stator to DC power to charge the battery (with no REGULATION). To control voltage he needs to add the kit to "lower the voltage" or he needs to turn stuff on to load the system to keep from overcharging the battery. He also needs to check the water/electrolite level in the battery to make sure it does not "boil out" the battery.
