I have a 1996 4.3 four winns and yesterday took the kids out for a lil skiing.. Boat cranked right up and drove it for about 200 yards and as I always do check the gauges. Looked down and seen engine at around 225 degrees so I shut the motor off. Upon inspection I notice the big hose leading to the water pump poped off. So I was able to put back on and was drifting to let engine cool. Needless to say I waited about 45 min and tried to crank back up but only to the sound of a click. Engine now will not turn over. I tried it this morning and it turned over for about a 1/2 of a second and went right back to the clicking sound??? The engine is a 2 year old jasper engine that I replaced. Any ideas of what to do from here.....could it be hydrolocked from a coolant hose popping off? Please help! Thank you

Is your battery fully charged?
Are the battery cables tight and connections to the block and starter tight?
Did you have any issue with the starter prior to the overheat?
How is the oil level and does it look OK?

It may have just damaged the solenoid

The battery is new and did not have a problem cranking prior to the hose falling off. And the oil looks good but have not pulled the spark plugs yet.

Pull all the spark plugs out, and try to turn the engine over. Don't wait to do this, do it now. If you get a little water of them you might have sucked in a little water from shutting down the engine before the boat stopped. if you can now turn it over, squirt a little oil in the spark plug holes and put the plugs back in and warm it up. If that works, change the oil, and replace your impeller. Dave -R

Do what Dave R said. If you shut the engine off when the overheat was noticed while the boat was moving and there was a big enough whoosh of backwash then some water could have been forced back up into the exhaust.

In salt water or brackish water that is too long of a time to wait. Fresh water, maybe, still iffy.

I had a similar occurrence about 2 years ago from an impeller issue. Motor locked up and later would slightly turn.
Removed engine from boat and it had melted the top of one piston enough to freeze the rings in place and on another piston if had melted enough to stiffen up the wrist pin so it was tight.

End result I got a remanufactured marine shortblock and put on new heads. Has run fine for two years now.
I am guessing you will not find it hydrolocked -- but will find overheat issues in the engine as I did.

good luck

Put a wrench on the crank pulley with plugs out and see if it turns. If it turns freely you have a starter issue.

I did put a wrench on the pulleys and it does spin freely... Just dropped it off at the shop an hour ago so will let you know what they say. Thanks again...

Did anything come out when you pulled the spark plugs? Or as you rotated the engine?

FYI, Took it the pros and they said that when my hose popped off it flooded the starter which in turn killed it. Put a new starter on it and we are good to go!!!! That you VERY much for all the responses. Best site online!
