What do you mean you can run it for a short period at WOT and not hurt the engine only if it happened only once.
Im hopping it didnt damage the engine. I checked the dipstick today and did not find any water or metal pieces in the oil, so maybe thats a good sign.

What do you think?

i think that if you spend less time talking about how it might not be broken and realize that it is broken, you could have had it fixed by now.

If the engine starts on fire and burns the boat up, or if you hit a submerged object, or if any other type of "accident" occurs, the insurance should cover you.

But if the motor is damaged thru lack of proper maintenance why should the insurance foot the bill? This wasn't an "accident", it was machinery failure. If your car dies due to high mileage and old age, that's not an insurance claim!

i don't know though, car insurance companies do some funny things, if boat insurance companies behave the same way, he might be covered.

if you hit a rock and crack your oil pan while driving, they will pay to fix it.

if you hit a rock and crack your oil pan and keep driving despite the oil light being on, and the smoke, and the smell, and the engine finally locks up, they still pay to fix it.

Lots of people think they have insurance coverage for certain things, but they don't . . .

Pure mechanical failures are usually NOT covered . . .

. . . a mechanical failure resulting from some sort of 'incident' (i.e. hitting something, fire, vandalism, etc) would be covered.

Bummer ...hate to here the bad news!

Lesson learned...DO NOT RUN/START A BOAT THAT KNOWINGLY HAS NO COOLING WATER - NO MATTER WHAT! EVEN IF THE IDOT TELL'S YOU ITS OK!

As far as WOT goes...If the manufacture didnt want you to ever go WOT on a boat for long periods of time then they would have put a big warning sticker on the dash.... Do not do this to your boat or a machanical failure will happen.
Come on people use your heads......Its just common sense!.... If i drive to work every day in my truck at WOT, then a mechanical failure could occure. That's just abusing your motor and drive train.

Everyone is right... your motor is not gona be happy.....

First you have to decide if you are the mechanic or someone else is. If it were me i would first start by draining the oil in the motor. Then the outdrive lube - Checking it's continence. Then go from there

Thats just my thoughts on this subject.
Good Luck!

Maybe the person that advised him to drive it at WOT thought the engine was already toast, so he couldn't really do any further damage?
