overheat alarm going off???

1988 Rude 80hp...the overheat alarm went off a few times even though it had a good pee stream. The pee was the same temp as the ocean...(not really warm at all). What should i check to see if it is a bad sensor or something worse going on. Other than that it ran fine...good power etc. Just when you got it up and running, the alarm would go off. Should the pee be a cool temp? And how can it overheat if it is peeing real good?

Check your thermostat. Maybe it does not open enough. There is a pee when you start your engine. The termostat is closed then.

How do i check if it is opening enough? Will i be able to see it? I know where it is, should i just take it out and replace it?

If you have a manual...<br />You can test it on your stove. Hang it from a wire so it wount tuch the bottom of your saucepan. (Don't let it boil.) The temperature specs is in the manual i suppose. Also how much it's supposed to open.<br /><br />I'm sure there is someone here who has the manual and can tell you. If you test it witout these specifications you'll see if it opens and closes.<br /><br />A new one, sure, it's your money <br />But if there is no improvement?<br /><br />Wait here and see if someone can post the specs.

Remove thermostat housing check relief springs and valve, check thermostat in hot water should start to open 143, be fully open 150/155. Sometimes the VRO will cause the alarm to sound apperantly for no reason. A fuel blockage or air in the fuel hose can cause this. If the alarm is a continious beeeeeeeeeeeeP the that is an overheat problem but if it is Beep- beep- then it is VRO.
