overheat potential problem

I have 1979 Wellcraft Nova 250 XL with a GM 305 898. This motor has a cooling system I did not check today and took to boat out. The cooling valve was closed and I overheated temp went to about 250. I corrected the blunder, and eventually re-started the motor ran at low speed, and the temp dropped to about 150. For awhile there was smoke coming from the motor, but that dissipated. At full throttle (which I rarely use) I get 4000 rpm, today after all of the above I only got 3200rpm.

Any and all input appreciated.
Thanks.

Re: overheat potential problem

I would do a compression test and a leakdown test to see if any damage has occured. How's oil look?

Re: overheat potential problem

Thanks.

Oil looks clean and at correct level. Last oil change was 5 hours ago. I' ll check the compression.
