My 1987 mercury 60hp 3 cylinder 2 stroke outboard overheated because of garbage bag over lowerunit. For some reason the beeper did not go off. It got so hot it discolered the spark plug half of the powerhead and started to melt some plastic parts. It runs but has low commpression on top cylinder. My question is, does a bad overheat totally ruin a motor? (crank, rods) Thanks

Re: overheated outboard

In most cases when a engine gets hot enough to damage it's self the damage is on the top cyls and will be any where from stuck rings to a scored cyl. Bearing damage usaully don't happen from overheating,
