overheating 260 hp mercruiser

i caught some sand last week and it evidently clogged up the intake/impeller because i'm getting no water to the block.does this require professional repair or is it something reasonably simple to fix?

Doing the job yourself is not especially difficult if you are mechanically included. Any owner service on an I/O or outboard should only be attempted with the aid of a service manual. Get one specific to your engine and outdrive. If you are unsure of your abilities, better leave it to the pro -- and be sure to tell him/her what you did. Don't say replace the impeller as it may be more involved than that.
