Hi,

I'm at my wit's end and hoping someone can help me.

I have a BW VelvetDrive 71c (10-17-008) that overheats after about an hour.
Last fall, the shifting became increasingly stiff and like I perfect noob, I ignored it until one day when the pump seized on me. I replaced the pump and rehoned the control valve and everything seemed fine for about an hour but then the overtemp alarm went off. I lost both forward and reverse (simply wouldn't spin the prop in either direction). After cooling down, it had thrust again but only to have it overheat again. Each time it overheated, I changed the oil and cleaned up the control valve.

I've tested the pressure and it's around 120-150psi.
I am totally lost as to what else I can check/fix or am I looking at complete rebuild?

Thanks!

Its over heating because the clutches are slipping, the trans needs a rebuild

Thanks, I really appreciate the help. It's what I was thinking (dreading) too.
I'm also concerned about the pressure valve (the spring-loaded part of the shifter valve). Do those tend to fail in these transmissions? I cleaned it up and it slides quite smoothly now (without the spring), but how can I be certain that it's not sticking and then failing to direct the oil to the cooler?

Your pressure is good, the issue happened when it was not. Prior the pump was failing and pressure was dropping, and during this time the clutches started slipping. The slipping is what causes the increased heat.

The trans has a clutch pack made up of steel plates and fiber disc. The fiber plates wear down fast once they start to slip. When they do start slipping the heat builds fast due to the load and they don't last long.

They are a pretty simple set up and easy enough to rebuild but do need tools and know how.

In short, your fiber disc and steel disc are shot and need replacing
