1970 Glastron 140 HP 181ci 4cyl s/n2676880.
After pulling the boat out of storage (2yrs) and performing a tune up the boat was running great, :) until put it on the water. :( At any speed the motor will overheat, the higher the RPM's the faster the temp rises.
At the end of every season I have always warmed up the motor then drained the intake/exhaust manifold, elbow, T-stat housing, and block. Then using compressed air blew out any remaining water and let the heat from the motor evaporate the rest.
Getting back to the problem, With the boat in the lake I removed the hose coming from the lower unit to check water flow (did not have any until I rev'd the motor up to 2000rpm)after that it would flow at all rpm's. With the hose laying horizontal at idle the water would make a 4" arc to the floor of the boat and at 2000rpm approx. 8"-10" arc. After reinstalling the fresh water hose to T-stat housing, I removed the drain plugs on the intake/exhaust manifold and elbow, the only thing coming out was exhaust. Concerned I pulled the hose coming from the front of the manifold to T-stat housing and also had exhaust. Is this normal ?
http://www.mercruiserparts.biz/partsimages/CRUISER/68573/14.gif

I have read about the exhaust flapper, Does anyone know if this motor has one since the exhaust exits through the prop. I removed the "ball check valve" many years ago and never had any problems, also cannot find it in any parts list.
One last thought could the exhaust be preventing the fresh water from entering?

Any and all help will be appreciated.

Re: Overheating Mercruiser 140

Ok, pulled the lower unit apart and found the impeller had taken a set and the seal (top of wp housing) had worked itself out of the housing. Ordered complete water pump assy (upper housing, impeller, lower housing, etc.). Finally received the new parts (OEM). Now the question is how do I install the new drive shaft seal into the new upper housing (the seal must be inserted from the inside)? I cannot get the metal cup to release or have they done away with the upper seal with the new style pump housing?

Re: Overheating Mercruiser 140

I just changed the impeller, upper housing, and lower base in my 1970 Merc 140. As I recall, the upper housing and lower base come with the driveshaft seals already in them. Just be careful taking them down over the o-ring groove (if you have one at the top of the driveshaft)--if the seals catches on the groove, you can destroy it.

Steve

Re: Overheating Mercruiser 140

I guess that I am not that lucky to have the seal installed. I have tried to manipulate the insert from the upper body with out success. I have tried using a allen wrench & hammer (gently), boiled it in water to try and make it expand, then boiled it and cooled the sleeve with ice. Nothing worked

Steve: Where did you purchase yours ? Was it OEM ?
