My friend has a 1998 Mercury 225 Offshore that overheats and he has recently replaced the thermostat and impeller, but the problem still persists.

Here are the symptons: After running 10 minutes or so, the engine overheats, alarm sounds. He tests the pee temperature by hand and the water is too hot to the touch. He kills the engine for only 20 seconds, restarts and the water is warm to the touch. The pee flow is good, then sometimes it's not. He can put the engine in neutral, rev up and the pee flow is good. When he returns to below revved engine speed, the flow remains normal most times, but often (not consistently) turns to a dribble. A mechanic friend and himself recently replaced the impeller and thermostat (repairs were not done by a pro). Any suggestions for him?

Did he silicone the exhaust chamber when he put it back together? If not check the impeller finns for direction the need to be a certain direction.
did they know about the woodruff key on the shaft that holds the impeller?

just a few starters

Re: Overheating Mercury 225

I went through that for about 4 months. finally figured out the bottom water pump housing was warped, Impeller slipped the keyway, the poppet valve had a pin whole. it was the water pump all the way. But I did make sure I put a great seal of black RTV (room tempurature Vulcanizing) between the exhaust gateway and water pump area.Wow lots of water pressure now. The stats hardly open now.

I had the same problem today.I fixed it by tapping a tapered tool into tube and pulling it out,(pliers will bend it)went to home depot and spent $2.87 cut and wow it took all the overheating problems away!If its not perfectly round I would replace. Now no steam!!

You already got some great suggestions and leads. If these fixes don't solve the problem and you need to troubleshoot further, installing a water pressure gauge and the below guide may help. Good luck
