Overheating!?! my FaULT!

I just got a good deal on a 1971 SeaRay.
WHen I got it home I found milky oil on the dipstick. So I replaced the headgasket, intake gasket and the carberator gasket. Flushed the motor with (engine safe) solvent. This fixed the milky oil problem. Took the boat out and had a blast (hooked for life).

1 week later I put the boat in the river wich was very low, and hit a sand bar.
Once i felt the boat slowed down i tried to trim up, but i was too late.
when I got passed the sand bar i trimmed down to get up on plane and noticed my engine wich was running very cool was now overheating!
I shut the engine down and trolled the boat ashore.

I called alocal marina, they told me to put the earphones on and check for water pump failer due to sand getting up in the drive sys. they told me to take the plugs out of the motor and check to see if the lower pump is pumping water up to the engine. And it is. So I know the lower water pump is fine. My best guess is that I have sand in the intake. So I am going to take the head and intake off again to clean an flushout. I should be done in a few days.

I guess my question is has anybody mad the same stupid mistake as I and what did it take to fix it? I am doing the right thing, looking in the right area ect?

Hi Csanna,

Yes, its happenned to me. I back flushed the system and replaced the raw water impeller. Its amazing how much cr#p gets sucked up in such a short time.

Sounds like you've got this covered.

Aldo

I bet you spun your coupler? But im not their. Wash/flush everything out and go try it. Look for "rubber dust" on the back side of your engine.

I'd be interested to know what exactly you have.OMC?VOLVO?MERCRUISER?All these have differnt seawater circ systems. You may well be running one of the many direct drives that where out there at the time .How are we to know what we are dealing with?

The coupler is bolted to the flywheel and the driveshaft of your sterndrive, the donkey [well you know] slides into it .It is a hub pressed tightly into rubber much like propellers are. They can wear out ,spin from impact, and become SET off balance due to running with poor alignment.

Why are you Tearing Down the engine, to Flush the Cooling System ???????

You either Need a Manual, or a Mechanic.......

Re: Overheating!?! my FaULT!

A spun coupler? The only way that could cause overheating is if it is so bad that the drive shaft isn't turning at all to pump water up to the engine. If you get on the throttle hard and the engine just revs and the boat doesn't go anywhere, then the driveshaft coupler on the back of the engine is spun, or the prop hub is spun. The prop wouldn't cause overheating, but the coupler would due to the driveshaft not turning to pump water up to the engine. However, if your boat drives fine, then I would check the lower water pump for clogs and flush out the system.

Re: Overheating!?! my FaULT!

hondon- The coupler is like a big boot or someting that covers drive train parts?
I didnt check that but I will now.
Does the water intake hose from the impeller run thru this coupler?
Bondo- Tearing down the engine? Im not tearing down the engine by takeing the Head an Intake off.
Am I? This engine is a very basic set up. Its actually fun to work on. Besides I was looking for Sand in the wrong places.
Merc200- I agree with you on the coupler thing.
Altho I do think this could happen.
This boat is in excellent condition so much of that stuff is in good shape.
Last night I put everthing back on but the carberator. Tonight I will have that on.
If it overheats I guess replaceing the Impeller would be my next guess.

Thx please respond back!

Hey I think I got a good Deal I only paid $1500
For a SeaRay! I manage a very successfull Automotive repair facility, so getting the maintnance done is easy.
replacing the head gasket on a 4 cyl (none-overhead cam) is way too easy!
I just put a new impellor in and she runs great.

Everyone says "thats a 71", "no way"

Sea Ray - Cadallac on water -

The $1500 also included a Tandem trailer with a new spare - all the tires where in good shape

Csanna - it sounds like you know your way around wrenching on autos, but marine engines have significant differences. Unfortunately, your milky oil on the dipstick == major trouble ahead.

Was the headgasket blown? I hope so! If not, you've got a crack in the block somewhere.

Get the manuals before doing any more work. Replace the impeller NOW, before going back out on the water, don't wait.

Re: Overheating!?! my FaULT!

The Milky Oil Problem was solved when I replaced the head gasket, Intake gasket and carberator gasket. The Intake gasket was the problem with water getting into the oil.

And of just recently I replaced the Impeller. Which was a pain in the ***. About the last thing to do before I can start working on the interior. Is to replace the alt-wtr pump belt, wich does not look easy. Due to the fact that it goes around the motor mount.

So is the hull on this boat strong enough to hold a small floor jack, So I can support the engine while I take the front motor mount loose? So I can replace the belt.

My Grammer Sucks! I was smoking in the bathroom During English class.

Any suggestions ty csanna

Re: Overheating!?! my FaULT!

Put a second (spare) belt around the mount when you fit the new one, cable tie it out of the way for future use.

Aldo

csanna,

Excellent advice by dunarunna. Put that second belt in.

Do not jack that engine up from the bottom of the boat. You have to lift it. Chain hoist or cherry picker time.

Re: Overheating!?! my FaULT!

Man that is a great Idea! About the second belt.
I called the boat shop and they said just use a block of wood and a wedge. They also said engine shouldt move much when the 2 9/16 bolts are removed, that the other mount and the other 9/16 bolts on the left side should hold it steady.

Im gonna try this Block method tonight.
Ill let you know how big of a hole I put in the Bilge area :p - J/K

any thoughts ty csanna
