I am running a 1982 Evinrude 115 on an 18' Novi skiff. After running at cruising speed I come to idle and the motor is steaming white smoke out of the exhaust ports. The water is hot to the thouch (but not too hot too touch). The water pump was replaced 2 years ago, should still be OK. I also get a good stream of water out of the pump pee hole.

I am worried of doing some damage to the motor and want to know if I am heating it up or if this is a result of a posible lean mixture or something else??

TH

Re: overheating?? Need help!

Time for a water pump (complete kit), head gaskets, deflectors and t-stat servicing. Pretty soon it'll be time for all that and pistons too.

Good luck!

dhadley...thanks for responding...are you saying that I may have some salt water rotting my insides?? by complete kit are you sugesting it no longer may be cooling the motor @ cruising speed/high speed?? I was actually hoping to get through the season and go to a new motor (my season here in the NE is short).

Hi Thetermit and Dhadley.

Of coarse impeller must be changed, at least every second year.

I experience the same. When having run wot and returning to iddle, lots of water with white steam from exhaust relief ports. Holding hand under, you can just hold your hand in stream.

Isnt that normal, i can hold my hand on cylinderhead for 5-10 secs, when at top temp.

Don't just change the impeller. get a good quality complete kit and change the plate, housing, grommetts-- everything. Especially if you only replaced the impeller last time. When servicing the cooling system, the pump is only the start. To do a complete job you need to replace the deflectors and t-stats too.

You can ignore the signs and continue to run it. If so here's the numbers you'll need -- E/J 396588 or Wiseco 3173P2. Your motor takes 4.

Good luck!
