I have a 1989 cabrea 85 horsepower outboard. I just had a new water pump put in and I still am having overheating problems. Thought it might me the oil injector so I started mixing my own and had 0 problems for a week, Overheat sensor came on yesterday. This only happens at higher speeds never while idleing.Any ideas???

Re: overheating outboard

get a new 1 and put it back in.they are in there for a reason. that might be your problem belive it or not but they are there to restrict and channel the water flow

Re: overheating outboard

steam ??? does it put out water at a steady stream ? was it over heating before the new water pump also

Re: overheating outboard

Water pump seems to be working fine steady stream while ideling or cruising at low speeds

Re: overheating outboard

Common causes of overheating:
1. Water pump
2. Thermostat
3. Cooling passage obstruction/clog
4. Head gasket
5. Bypass valves or check valves or cooling deflectors
6. Too much advance in ignition timing
7. Too lean mixture
8. No oil

There are probably some others I forgot.
