Overheating question

I have a 1990 WellCraft 230 Coastal with a 5.7 Mercruiser and an Alpha One outdrive. The engine overheated last weekend while trolling with the main engine. Temp guage read about 190 to 200 deg. Had some blue smoke coming out of the breather tubes just prior to me shutting the motor off. I figured the impeller in the outdrive is junk, and plan on replacing it. I am wondering if there is anything that I need to look for as far as damage from overheating? Buddy told me that rings have been known to fuse to pistons? Also something about lead plugs in the block that melt if the temps get too high? I plan on changing the engine oil too after she started smoking. Any thoughts?

Re: Overheating question

depends on how long you ran it hot as to how much damage you may or may not have done , if you have fixed the problem i would start it up ,with muffs ofcourse, just to watch and listen to all gauges and sounds .if it sounds different than it used to then i start tearing down ,but not untill then. some in here will disagree with this post just to show off there technical knownledge , so if you have to tear into it anyways what will it hurt to start it anyway. why try to fix something you dont know is broken in the fisst place.

That kinda what I figured as well. I was for sure going to change the impeller and engine oil before I check anything else. I was just wondering if anyone knew of any sure fire things to check for if someone overheated.

190? - 200? is just a bit warm for a marine engine in an inclosed engine compartent, but it is in no way doing harm to the engine at that temp. Most automotive engines run hotter than that normally.

Re: Overheating question

Thats kinda what I figured, but the with steam exiting the exhaust and the oil smoking, it had me kinda worried about wrecking something.
