overheating question

I had my 1985 15h out last night and it started overheating. everything was running great but when i had it at a slow idle it quit spurting water when i reved the motor it started pumping along with some steam when i kept the idle up it stayed cool as soon as i slowed it down no water and started to over heat. after reading some posts on here it makes me believe that the water pump and impeller are starting to go. do you think i am on the right path? thanks in advance

Either the pump is on the way out or you sucked up some debris. Either way, it needs to come apart.

that would be my first place. your shift linkage connector is either under a 1"x2" plate, 1/2 way up the leg. or you have to drop the lower unit, 1/2 inch, and get to the bolt thru the small opening between lower and midsection.

i think i will order the repair kit. I am thinkin of getting the evinude service manual is it worth the money or should i go with the cheaper selok general service manual?

absolutely go with a factory service manual the seloc manual are partically useless they cover many engines in little detail the factory manual only has your motor. check ebay or outboardbooks.com

one more question. do you guys think is would be safe to still use the motor until the parts come in? as long as it is spurting water i would think i would be safe. Any thoughts?

No, the telltale doesn't tell if the motor is overheating. Running a motor too hot is inviting disaster.
