I have a chrysler 1983 75hp and the over heating buzzer goes off when i am hardly moving at all. At full speed it works fine and it runs great.<br />Does this sound like the water pump is bad or could it be something else. thanks

Re: overheating

Yes, the water pump is shot. Luckily, it must be in one piece still, as it pumps a little water when it's running at a higher RPM. But if it were my boat, it would be docked until the impeller and thermostat was changed-out. When it grenades inside the housing, pieces go throughout the cooling circuit. Sometimes when this happens, a complete tear-down is needed to remove the chunks....ungood. So you probably caught it in time.

Re: overheating

The impeller is the heart of your water pump. It looks like a starfish made of rubber to drive the water in the cooling system. You probably know that you have to drop the lower unit in order to get to the pump and the impeller inside of it. You may or may not have a thermostat on your model. A Sleloc or Clymer manual would show if you do. A fairly common location for it is on (in) the motor just before the "**** hole." To replace the thermostat, you usually just take off its housing cover, etc. Good luck.
