overheating

on 1991 Force 120Hp I ran the engine without water for 3 to 5 minutes,this caused the impeller to brake. I replced the impeller along with housing and gaskets,there's water shuting from the 3 holes in the back of the unit,I the took the boat for a spin and after 1/2 mile out the overheating alarm came on.I the checked the thermostat and foudout that it was removed already.<br />what else can I check for?<br />All advise is greatly appreciated.<br /><br />Diego E.

did the engine run without overheating before you ran it out of the water?<br /><br />running engine without thermostat can cause problems, especially in cold weather<br /><br />are you positive the impeller vanes are bent the correct direction?

Welcome to iboats Diego.<br /><br />Water passages could be clogged with debris or pieces of the old impeller.<br /><br />Water tube not connected to the water pump when lower unit was put back on.<br /><br />Not the correct amount of oil mixed with the gas?<br /><br />2.6 ounces per gallon of gas<br />16 ounces per 6 gallons of gas.

Check your alarm sensor, it could be bad. Use an ohm meter to check continuity. Immerse thermoswitch in hot water. Should close between 160 - 170 degrees.

impeller in backwards? the reason im asking because i did that.be sure to turn the shaft clockwise when replacing impeller.
