I have a 1983 350 260 hp in my 27 ft carver I have put on a new stern drive so the impeller is new all new hoses and manifold and risers took it out about a month ago and it ran fine took it out last night and it sounded like a belt was slipping a god awful screeching and the temp started rising the therm stat is also new I did not replace engine water pump that is belt driven and more than likely it is bad . The only reason I ask this is because when I throttled up to about 1500 rpms the screeching stopped but it kept getting hotter.I plan on replacing water pump but any other things I should look for?

Re: overheating

on a cold engine with the boat in the water, pull the main water feed hose that comes off the transom plate to the tstat housing off, start the boat up and make sure your actually getting good flow up from the drive.

Re: overheating

Who ever put the the drive together messed up big time.

Now you have to track down every piece.

T-stat is where you'll find some.

If you have a heat exchanger is where some more will be.

The hose running to the t-stat might have some.

Not necessarily, since it worked the first time out, I doubt anything the builder did could cause it to work once and not the second time out.
I have seen them go bad like that from having a plastic bag get over the intake. Once the water flow stops, the hot exhaust will melt the pump housing, and the water pocket, and anything else plastic in the drive exhaust path. That includes the bellows and exhuast hoses at the engine.

Re: overheating

I had a bag over my water intake also.

Soon as it went to 190 i turned it off lifted the drive sure enough a plastik bag.

You wouldn't believe some of the stuff i see in the bay, whole tables, skids, lawn chairs, whole trees, water heaters.

Body just washed up on shore not to long ago.

Could be something did clog your intake.
