Re: overheating

Water should spray and dribble out the exhaust relief port (that large hole on the back of the leg). That motor doesn't have a pee hole like newer motors. There should be a good healthy spray, but no stream.

Re: overheating

Should be a water tube coming down the leg and attaching to the water pump housing. That motor has a thermostat, and yes, they do go bad.

Re: overheating

The thermo is located under a plate on top of the cyl head. Takes 3 bolts to remove plate and get at it. Go to Shop.Evinrude.com and look up your mtr and you will see a good diagram of it.

Re: overheating

So you are saying there is no water tube at all in the engine?

Was it there when you looked at the pump the first time?

Don't run this engine till you get this figured out, it doesn't take much to overheat them and cause alot of damage.

Re: overheating

There is a tube in the in the bottom that goes from the top of the water pump to the engine. And now it is hooked up.

Re: overheating

I have been gifted a lonestar with a Evinrude 1965 33hp. I replaced fuel lines and started it in a barrel of water. I only ran for about 30 seconds watching for signs of water pump working but don't know exactly where to look for water coming out at idle and prop in netural. At the back of the gear case group there was 3 ports. This motor has not been in the water since 97. I have a parts manuel.

Welcome to iboats!

Just an opinion..... I would replace the impellar just based on the age........ and the lower unit oil too. Those 33's are great motors.

Those old motors pump a whole lot of water when the water pump is working properly, even when in neutral. Here's a video of my old 28 ideling.
