Hey guys, I have a 2004 Volvo Penta 5.0 L Gxi-E thats overheating. It overheats when its throttled up on plane, but then the temperature comes right back down when you let off the throttle. It has a new water pump, t-stat, and exhaust manifolds and risers. Ive spent a lot of money and im getting no results...any ideas? I really need the help.

Re: Overheating

It has a new water pump

Which water pump is new? Hopefully, you are referring to the one on the front of the crankshaft.
Download this Volvo overheat diagnostic file.

Also make sure the cap on the engine flush hose is tight and has a good seal. If it sucks air, you get a leak.
If you have a NeutraSalt system, if the valve sticks open and the fluid is gone, it will also suck air and you will overheat.

Re: Overheating

Its the pump on the front of the motor that houses impeller, belt driven...

Re: Overheating

There are 2 pumps on the front of the engine. One is the raw water or sea water pump, mounted on the front of the crankshaft. It has a rubber impeller. The other "Water Pump" is the engine circulation pump mounted onto the block. It has a steel impeller.
Note also, that the raw water pump is not belt driven, it is driven by the crankshaft. The belt pulley is what drives all the other items on the belt, like alternator and power steering.

This is a Neutra Salt system http://www.volvopentastore.com/QL-N...*****.633365897--store_id.366--view_id.352393

Was your outdrive taken apart before this problem occurred ?

Re: Overheating

Ok, I understand...it was the raw water pump that was replaced. It has an SX outdrive and it was not taken apart as far as I know. I just got it back out of the shop last week and when I spoke with my mechanic he said it appeared that the engine wasnt getting sufficient circulation through it? He then called me back and said that the exhaust manifolds and risers were corroded and clogged from salt water use and that was the reason why the circulation was bad. HE assured me that would fix my problem....he was wrong.

Re: Overheating

Thank you sir for the information. I have one more question and then ill get out of your hair and please excuse my ignorance to this as I am not a mechanic or mechanically savy. Ive noticed on other overheatign threads that some have overheating problems that occur when at idle and others occur while the engine is throttled up at elevated RPMS. Obviously my problem occurs in the latter category. Are there specific areas in that diagostic literature that you provided me I should be lookign at based on when my engine is overheating?
