should be fine, the if 85 transom is rated at 60, in 1985 that would have been at the prop, the 1979 motor was rated at the powerhead, lucky if 60 makes it to the prop:facepalm:idk if this would hold up in court w/insurace lawyers

Good point. Using that reasoning, he's good to go and "legal". Besides, he has a "60" cover on a motor that is physically identical to a 60 horse. Who is going to tell the difference?

The motor actually has a 60hp cowl on it, the previous owner lost the org. cowl in the lake and could only find this 60hp. I

If the cover says 60 on it; then it's a 60 to anybody looking at it.

DING DING DING....... BUT stand on the lower unit with both feet and bounce HARD while a helper watches the transom from the side for ANY sign of flex. No flex = healthy transom

All you're gonna get here is guessing- nobody can tell you for sure if this is safe or not. It is technically illegal. It is potentially unsafe.
These are facts. Everything else is simply educated guessing. It's your boat, your motor, your wallet. Do whatever you want.
I doutbt anyone here who'd tell you this is okay to do will be willing to back it up with their wallet.

Brewman61, some how I don't think he was seriously looking for permission but merely some educated and experienced guidence being his first boat.

Take all these differing opinions and use them as such guidence. No one is the owner but you. So with all these opinions, use your own common sense and you already stated that you would have a certified boat mechanic look it over. Mention the transom if he or she seems to over look it. Other then that, I think you will enjoy boating after everything is known to be a okay...

How many naysayers would raise an eyebrow if he put on a brand new 60, which would likely put out more HP than his current 70? Since you only paid $100 for your rig spend the extra couple bucks to have it professionally looked at.

jigngrub your startin' to scare me now! lol. I have zero experience with boats, that being said maybe I should take it to a marina for an exam! I only gave $100.00 for the boat and trailer, and the trailer is pretty cool, it has an extendable tongue so as when putting the boat in the water the tires on the truck don't even get wet.

Well, your first lesson is NEVER, EVER, EVER believe anything the previous owner tells you.....like....ever. All he wants to do is sell you his boat.
