Does anyone have a copy of the manual they might be able to email me? I am interested in the motor leg lock and release. Is the lock supposed to let go if encountering a certain amount of resistance against the leg?

not an expert on this so at least it will bump ya...... my best guess is that the motor lock would have to actually break. For that reason I usually run with mine unlocked so that if I do hit something my engine tilts up. I have seen people rip lower units off hitting rocks at speed with their leg locked. I just cant think that the lock would be pressure sensitve.

I've got no owner's manual for that, but I can answer you're question. Pony is partially right - it's to lock down the engine so it won't come up when it's reved in reverse. But it is actually pressure sensitive and will release if the moment on the leg at the propshaft exceeds around 300lbs. So if you do hit a rock or whatever while you're motoring along in forward, the engine will pop up and slam back down (once you pass) with no damage. The very large springs just behind the tilt/swivel bracket are what hold the lock closed.
Of course, you want to have it in "Release" to tilt the engine up or when you think striking an obstruction is likely & don't need reverse.

Thanks for the info Paul. I hit a submerged log that some damn beaver left in a narrow channel on the lake, and the motor did indeed release. I wanted to make sure this is normal. I am thinking I might like to ease up the amount of pressure required to release the lock to avoid bashing the leg that hard again, but still keeping the motor from climbing out of the water in reverse.
How's the tach adventure coming along? Do you want me draft up a PC board?

No trouble!
You could try removing one of the two springs. The 33/28/early 35/30/25hp Big Twins had this arrangement, but I'm not sure if the springs were the same. The longshaft setup had stiffer springs.
With the lock partly defeated, the engine can pop up when reversing hard. But there seems to be a wide margin on the lock - I don't think you could develop close to 300lbs of reverse thrust at the prop given the throttle restriction and how poor the propellers perform in reverse.

The tach is coming along just fine. Right now I'm waiting for the test tach to come in the mail. Once it does I'll post an update. Thanks for the offer! I may take you up on that once I get it tested out properly. :) I seem to remember there was a short run PCB fabrication shop in Edmonton but I can't seem to find it. Do you know anything about it?

Hi Paul, the only PC fabricator I am aware of is Eddy Electronics, but they are very pricey. I had some boards made years ago before I started making my own, and they were about 20 times the cost had I made them myself.

I just may remove one of the springs, but next season as the water is getting pretty cold for boating here now.
