How fast will a 3.80m long sailboat probably go with a 7.5hp Johnson?

Re: Owners manual Johnson Seahorse CD-15

What is a meter? We don't have those in the States :) Let's see a 3.8 m = 12ft. A 7.5 hp would make a nice little kicker/harbor motor on a boat that small and may actually pushing it along at a little over 5 mph when the boat is full loaded. Maybe even a bit more depending on the weight and draft of the baot. I've seen 3 hp motors push much larger vessels than that around. You won't break any speed records, but it should be more than enough for moving around in port and short cruising expeditions.

Btw here are the motors I've had so far. Nothing very interesting really. They've all been from the 60's OMC era when everything was white with fiberlgass cowls, rather than the 50's era models with two tone paint and aluminum cowls. However, the motor s themselves are virtually identical to there 50's counterparts. My first motor was a '66 33 hp Ski Twin. Great motor. A little bulky, but not as heavy as it looked. Very fast on the 14' fiberlgass skiff I had it one ( a little too much really ). Also, very reliable and easy to work on except for removing the flywheel which took a bit of work. I then had a '61 10 hp QD-22. Another awesome little motor. I traded it for a an elecric trolling motor. It was dead when I got it, but cam back to life with ease. It did have some clutch dog issues as was common for that model, but it was 50+ years old after all. I now have a '66 20 hp, which is the perfect balance of power and weight, in my opinion. It's really just the much loved 18 hp from the 50's with a white paint job. It was also dead when I got it and a donor motor for $100. After about $75 in parts and some TLC, it runs better and more reliably than any motor I've ever had. I get lots of looks and comments at the boat ramp too. I also have a little 3 hp, air-cooled, direct drive 3 hp back up/kicker motor that I always take with me. It's ugly, but has never let me down and has saved my butt more than once. I used to use it on my flat back aluminum canoe a lot too, which was tons of fun. I'll try to post some pics.

Re: Owners manual Johnson Seahorse CD-15

I was just kidding about meters :) I wish we were on the metric system over here. I'm a scientist/nerd at heart and metric is soooooo much better and easier to use than the British standard system. It's silly to bother trying to figure out the difference between 5/16 and 9/32, when you could just use their simpler millimeter equivalents.

Here are a few pics:

My first motor was a '66 RXE-14, 33 hp: I don't have a pic, but here's a link to a vid of one just like mine.

My second motor was '61 QD-22, 10 hp: great little motor. perfect for a beginner to learn on.

QD-22 side shot.jpg

My current motor is a '66 FD-20, 20 hp: Best all around motor I've ever had. This pic shows the PVC tiller extension I made and my bamboo push pole. I've since painted alternating segments of the bamboo white just to make it look a little better.

My trusty 3 hp kicker motor. Just a pic I found online. Mine is even uglier, but it never lets me down :)

Thanks for the pictures! I love the QD and your kicker motor :D! Your 3hp seems to be very reliable, I like that .
The bamboo is a very cool idea, I love it! Now you have a jungle boat, you must paint your outboards green with a few monkies on it :D.

A monkey for a first mate would be pretty awesome! I could train him to pull start the motor for me and clean up the boat when we get home. LOL. Bamboo is great. It's like the PVC of nature. Best of all it's free and looks pretty good.

Here are some pics of the "jungle" and beach I usually go to. You should come visit.

Here's a little baby alligator. They're all over the place. They're like squirrels of the river :)

Here's a pic of a lighthouse about half an hour from my house.

Wow! You have a very cool and beautiful backyard! Here in the Netherlands you've only alligators in a zoo.
It's really awsome !!!

Thanks. That was just a baby. Here's a pic of one that was just a little bit bigger :) It was known to kill and eat entire 200+ lb. (100 kilo) deers for its meals. The police officer in the pic is 6'5'' (over 2 meters) tall!!! LOL.

We also have lots of these:

It's always fun when the animals are bigger than your boat and can eat you :) It keeps you on your toes.

It's not all scary though. We also have these :)

Re: Owners manual Johnson Seahorse CD-15

Thank you very much for the photo's! It's very beautiful :)!
Today I picked up my motor which I bought for 150 euro ($197). It's not a CD-15 as I told you, but a 1958 7.5HP AD-12 :). It's in quiet good condition, even the rubber strip underneath the motor cover looks like new! It sat for 20+ years, but it's still in very good condition and it has low ours on it. It came also with the original pressurized fuel tank, which is in good shape too (no rust on the inside)...
In about 3 weeks I can send you photo's from my outboard(s).

Greetings JohnRudeMan

Re: Owners manual Johnson Seahorse CD-15

AWESOME! Sounds like you found quite a good deal. Not to worry, the 7.5 hp motor is very strong for its size and I LOVE the reverse two-tone paint job. Here's a link to a parts catalog with exploded diagrams for your motor and one for general maintenance. Congratulations again on the new toy. I can't wait to see the pics.

btw....when/if the time comes, you can order most parts you might need right here at iboats, if you can't find them in Holland.

Thank you very much for the links kfa4303 :)!

Does anybody know how many times you must turn the slow and highspeed needles back from gently seating on a Johnson Seahorse 7.5hp 1958?

Note: ist a 7.5hp, not a 5.5hp!

Low speed is 1 1/2 turns out and high speed is 3/4 turn out.

A 7.5 huh? Those are good motors too. I have a '54 Fleetwin, which is basically the Evinrude version of the AD model. Run that at 16:1 mix (1/2 pint per gallon) plugs are J6C that set at .030 and points set at .020.

Re: Owners manual Johnson Seahorse CD-15

Hello, JohnRudeMan.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Excellent screen name, sir. :)

Yes, many of us have manuals for the CD-15, but it is against our rules for you to ask us to give or sell them to you.

You can order a reprint of the original manual (recommended) from www.outboardbooks.com. . . .or. . . perhaps someone will send you a Private Message with other suggestions.

PS: Your English is flawless; much better than many lifelong English speakers/writers.

i would appreciate a pm on the same subject?? maybe 2 years newer tho?;)

Re: Owners manual Johnson Seahorse CD-15

Hello again (John?). Here are a couple more handy links and a few pics of the bamboo kicker motor rack I mentioned earlier and my trip to the lake today. It was a little chilly, but nice and sunny. Best of all I got to test out my new PVC tiller extension and bamboo push pole and they both worked great! The extension made steering the boat much easier with just the slightest adjustment and it enabled me to stand up and steer at low speeds. Congratulations again on your new toy!

(this link is for a 5.5 hp, but the basic procedure will be the same for your motor.

Yea, I seen one like it, a week or two earlier, but nice unrestored condition for $1200, but I don't think it was the same motor. I wonder if he had any luck selling his.

What is a better mix for running my AD-12, 16:1 or 24:1?
