Oxidation question

I just finished rebuilding my transom.

While reglassing , I used a little resin to fill a couple small chips.

I noticed after it dried that the area shined like a new boat.

My upper hull is extremely oxidized.

My question is .

From what I've described, will my whole boat shine this well?

If so , what do I use to restore my gelcoat ??

Its a 1978 procraft bass boat .

The lower hull area looks good . But the upper area is not so good.

I believe from the sun .

Thanks,

KYHunter

Re: Oxidation question

KYHUNTER2 my 1983 winner bass boat was the same way you have described yours. I have sanded with 180 then wet sand with 800 and then 1000 grit paper. then buff it with compound it looks like new. P.S the oxidation on my boat was very bad you may get by with wet-sanding and compound only?

Re: Oxidation question

KyHunter2 you need to do a search on this subject. Also try the word "comet cleanser".

This has been discussed a lot!

Don't' waste your money on a cheap orbital buffer they are worthless. I bought a Milwaukee 11 amp polisher and the compound and polishing bonnets. I used Starbrite- medium cut compound and Collinite wax. My 74 Wellcraft was so oxidized that the chalkyness would wipe off on your hands. I ve posted in other threads w/ pics details on doing it, but to make a long story short it took 2 hours from start to finish the hull shines like new with a little effort. ......

Re: Oxidation question

Don't bother with the wet sanding and all that stuff. It's too much work. Log onto marinestore.com. They have a gelcoat restoration system called Vertglas that works great. I used it on my weathered boat and it looked like new again. I didn't have to reapply for 2 years and then I just added a couple of coats. It's a little labor intensive, but it's not hard. You won't get winded and you won't need a buffer either. They give you enough product to cover three 16 foot bass boats and it's only 60 bucks. I highly recommend it.
