Ive got a P3 PC, w/ 3 memslots, if I put 3 256K chips in, in any combo, I always get only 512K memory? Why? I did do motherboard bios update. Even if I put 2 256K and 1 128K chip in, it just sees 512? Any thoughts would be great, Thanks,

Its probably a chipset limition not a Processor limitation. Back then 128meg was a lot of memory. 512K is fine. I hear about sytems with a gig and mine will do 2 gig but I only run 512meg as thats the sweet spot. Any more it goes wee bit faster and thats it so it take 28 seconds to boot instead of 30 woo hoo!. Not.

It likely is a chipset limitation, but most PIII motherboard should go 1GB or better. Do you have the manual for the motherboard, or do you know the make/model/revision number? You'll normally see that info silkscreened on it somewhere.

Most manuals are still available, and may help you find out for certain why you cannot go over 500MB.

Don't forget to check to make sure you've got the latest BIOS revision. But I would like to know the make/model/rev too.

IS an Intel D815EEA and I just downloaded latest BIOS, SYS bus is 133 and 733mhz processor. I've got 3 hard drives totalling approx. 50 gig, floppy and CD,dual head video card for 2 monitors, and XP Pro, I'm not complaining, is quick enough, just hey if I have 3 256K chips, why not use em and see how fast I can go?? :) Thanks,

Hmm, looks like 512MB max on that board, and no work around. I'll keep looking for one though...
(I had one board that would only report 1/4 or the RAM you put into it. Didn't matter what kind, size, slots, nothing. It was actually pretty entertaining until one day it only started reporting 1/16th the RAM...)

EDIT: No solution, it's a limitation of the Intel 815 chipset. 512MB max.

Thats unfortunate Heinz, but the board will not use more than 512MB by design. Seems some manufacturer's forgot that thier products may be in use for a long period of time, and did not allow for expansion.

I had a compaq that was DESIGNED with a memory limitation - so they could force you to upgrade

or

some low end boards just dont support higher end memory because they figure the cheap people who buy them will not spend the money on memory..

Ask the mfg of the computer or board and they will tell you what that model number will support

Why still use that old outdated system, for a couple hundred dollars you can buy a barebones system and have at least a 2 gig board. Then just put in your stuff and you have a new computer that will do what you want it to.

I'm just gonna live with it, I don't have a few hundred bucks to put in anything that isn't a neccessity these days. Yeah later down the line I'll build another faster system. :)
