JB,
Have you been able to remember the name of the Old Salt that gave you the tour of Pearl yet?
If you can share it with me I may be able to get some information about how he earned it.

Take Care,

Re: Paging JB

No I haven't, PH.

I do remember that it was a short name, 4 or 5 letters, and that he was an AC3 when I knew him (must have been busted a few times :) )

I do know that he was an AC at the time of Pearl Harbor, too, but I don't know if he was just a striker or a PO at that time.

He told me about being on duty in the tower at Ford Island when the first strike came in. By the time it was over he was down at Battleship Row dragging Arizona survivors out of the oil.

He was a real maverick type.. .often in trouble, with little or no respect for regulations. Would make you think of Pappy Boyington (the real one).

If that helps ID him I would be grateful.

Re: Paging JB

Hi, PH.

A striker is a non-rated (not a petty officer)Navy enlisted man designated for a specialty, in this case Air Controller. AC3 is a Petty Officer, third class, Air Controller.

I think I heard of Chief Mead. He was AR2 at the time of Pearl Harbor (Aviation Radioman, second class) and a legend in the aviation Navy by the time I came along.

(EDIT: My memory has improved today. The man I spoke of here was Chief Hargrove, not Chief Mead.)
