i have a 1990 sunbird and the owner before me took all of the lettering off the side that said sunbird. it now has a faded paint with a brighter sunbird lettering (without the letters) on the side of the boat. i tried using polishing compound but it didnt do anything. i am going to stop on my way home and buy some rubbing compound to see if that works. my co worker told me to get 1000 grit sandpaper and wet sand it..it sounds like a good idea but i worry about the gel coat. can someone please help me with this

I had a 1986 with the same issues. Here is by far the best solution. Use 3M "Super Duty Rubbing Compound" part #051131-05954. Apply liberally and buff with one of those standard electric car wax bugger you can get at Walmart or any auto store. Wipe the excess off immediately dry terry cloth towel and you'll have a nice shiny like new finish. Get some wax or UV protection on it right away to keep it shiny. Depending on how much the boat is out in the sun you'll have to repeat this process every one or two years. Good luck!
