Paint for galvanized steel?

My BW has a metal angle (about 1-1/2"x1-1/2") top/rub rail that was added many years ago that runs all the way around the top edge of the hull ( I think the boat was used as some sort of a work boat). The paint that is on it is flaking off and I would like recommendations for re-painting it. It appears to be galvanized steel.

Prep well (remove all old paint or sand smooth) and use a primer like zinc chromate or the Rustoleum Aluminum and Galvanized steel primer, then paint with a good oil based paint like Rustoleum Top Side marine paint.

... or you could just prep it and shoot it with canned Cold Galvanizing paint if you don't mind it being silver.

^^ +1 ^^ . Also it would be a good idea to give it a wipe down with a 50/50 mix of vinegar and water . And wipe down real good with acetone before priming ..

This may be a LOT more than you want to know but I offer it for your knowledge if you care to partake...

Galvanized IS a different kind of animal when it comes to getting a successful paint job especially when using alkyd based paints. Take special care in the prep and the primer if you want it to last. An Epoxy paint or "Thane" might be a better choice.

Re: Paint for galvanized steel?

I've got a home-built back hoe that I used a lot of odds n ends in constructing - including some pieces of galvanized pipe I had laying around. All I did was clean the galvanized stuff off with paint thinner, clean with automotive type prep-cleaner, prime with Rustoleum bare metal primer (because that's what I was using for the other pieces and had it on hand) and top coat with Rustoleum enamel.

Did this in mid-1990's. It has been out in the So. Cal. sun since then and the paint on the galvanized pieces, although faded, is still holding strong.

The key to any quality finish is in the prep work...period! It doesn't matter what you are going to paint, prepare the sub-straight properly and use quality products and it will last for years to come. It doesn't matter if its metal, fiberglass, wood or whatever, there are certain procedures to follow to get quality results. And prep and using a good primer coat will yield the best results. You do need to use compatible products too. So don't use one manufacture's primer with another manufacture's paint...unless they are compatible with each other. Read and understand everything you are going to use for that compatibility before starting to avoid disappointment after the lengthy effort(s)!
