Ok so after we sanded down our unproperly thinned primer on the bottom of the boat we were left with this.

This primer is AWFUL to sand. Took two days just to get it to look like this.

Question is do we need to re-primer the bottom? Or could we paint like this?

Sorry forgot to mention that those white spots are back down to the gel coat.

haha its just so damn frustrating, the primer said it can be rolled on. Even though we effed up the reduction on the bottom (top in picture), the sides 1st and second coat we followed the instructions to the T and it still orange peeled like a mother *&^^&#*$. I can't feel my damn arms we have been sanding for 2 days straight and still not done.

Um what are you using for a roller ? The prefered roller for roll and tip is a 4" high density foam followed by a foam brush lightly to remove bubbles. I did not thin any of my paint before rolling by the way but I used rustoleum not sure what your using.

Do yourself a favor and go get a random orbit sander from Harbor Freight it will save your arms trust me :D. I would recomend one of them and 320 grit paper .

Yeah this primer was THICK, like pudding. And called for 10-15% reduction if rolling. All it is, is primer and Im worried it wont stick in those spots. This primer doesnt self level very well at all. Its dupont imron? primer. I can barely move. my whole body hurts. All I can do is keep drinking till the pain goes away

Oh, rick. I have the random orbital!!!! haha It took 60 grit to knock the awful mountains off the surface of this stuff. Then 100grit, 150, 220 and we still have tiny pits in some areas. When I stay perfectly still I can still feel my hands vibrating. I guess the good thing is that this stuff really is tuff as nails./

imron was frequently used to paint airplanes and is very tuff.

Yeah the owner of the paint shop said they use it on the navy seal boats too. Sadly its just waaaaay too much work for me to ever use again haha. If my boat was worth more than 2000 bucks I might use it again.

Re: Paint gurus, how bad is this?

next time we will paint a test area and see how it comes out before committing to the whole project, yes? :p

As far as the spots go, the biggest thing with paint is having something to bond to. The Gel coat is going to have all the micro scratches it is going to need for paint to bond to it IMHO, but if it gives you some piece of mind, thin that Imron down to 20% and roll it on. Primer doesn't have to be thick to allow a good bond, it's only a barrier coat. The only other reason to make sure the whole boat is grey is if you are going to paint it a light color that isn't a solid ( like a metal flake or translucent ).

Epoxy primer is what you are fighting..... not fun

Epoxy primer has one significant drawback..... it is "supposed" to be top coated within 24-48 hrs. Sanding it to get it ready for a new topcoat is just very tough work. You are doing fine keep up the good work.

Wouldn't a vacuum system be great! Looks like the dust is starting to bank against the walls! Ha!

You're wearing a mask, right?

Wearing a mask< tyvek suit< goggles< gloves. Which makes sanding so much more fun!!! The dust is piling up. Thanks for the info guys.
