When spray painting, can any pieces/parts that you don't want painted be smeared with Vaseline. Then just wash/wipe it off. Does this work? I need to paint my boat trailer and all the bolts/nuts on it are stainless and I don't want to paint them. If not Vaseline, any other suggestions.

You can use grease..... we did it in the army. It makes a terrible mess. Why not just paint over the bolts or remove them before you paint. Stainless steel will rust and a coat of paint would help them.

I am not sure how the vaseline will work.

Proablly take just as long to wrap a piece of tape around the head and nuts. It would be less of a mess too. Id probally just go ahead and paint em.

Yup - grease and Vaseline will both make a mess. Trouble with using that theory when spraying is that the air pressure can - and will - blow some of the goop onto the area you want to spray. Well guess what? Now you've got that goop all over places that you don't want it to be. Wanna' be real particular then throw some blue painters tape on them or as everyone else said - just paint over them.

To do what you want to do will be hard.Grease will not work for the reason gcboat and bob vt says one way would be to tape all the heads up and spray away second way would be to cut-in all around the heads and brush the trailer. I did mine by brushing several coats and I no bolt heads that needed not to be painted the other reason I brushed it was it takes a lot less paint to brush versus spray, and less time if you do your clean-up on your spray gun correct.Good luck Jim
