The original gelcoat of my 1982 Saratoga Sunbridge is that odd filing cabinet yellowish-tan color of that era. I was just going to paint it but have heard several conflicting opinions. Some have said use only marine paint (such as Interlux), others have said use marine paint for the bottom and automotive or marine topside and others have said just use gelcoat.

I'd love to hear some experienced opinions - please tell me what you think.

Thanks a million!

Re: Paint or Gelcoat?!?

Pinwheel, it sounds like you have a lot of research to do. There are actually numerous thread here on iboats about paint versus gelcoat. I believe at lease one has the same title as your thread. Expect a lot of opinions on both sides. Paint people believe strongly that is they best way. Gel coat people believe equally as strong about their way.

My project (see ling in my sig) boat, a 1981 Sea Ray, has that exact same color. I am going with new gel coat, for two reasons. 1) it is more durable. While gel coat requires annual maintenance (buffing), it lasts a long time and takes a licking (bumps and knocks). The other, and main reason, is that it is forgiving. If I mess up gel coating (like bugs, or dust, or compressor hose drags across it while wet, I can buf it out.

Paint, on the other hand requires little or no maintenance, but only lasts 5-10 years (may be long enough for you). Paint requires a lot of preparation (perfect surface) before painting. Gel caot needs basic prep before, but a ton of sanding after.

There is a lot to say about each. Best advice is to read all the threads you can find here on iboats on the subject. Then make your decision.

Sea ya...
