Re: Paint question on motor and cowl

Well in one of the posts i had here i said i was going to put one light coat of zc followed by one light coat of black sandable primer. Will that hurt the top coat paint from sticking or just use one coat of zc and thats all you need. Also i was thinking could you use one coat of zc and one coat of self etching on top of that to have the best of both worlds and to have the best protection possible. Will the self etching stick to the zc?

No help on this one i guess.

I guess I thought we had it resolved already.

Primer is meant as a bond coat to the metal, plus a substrate for the top coat. Sandable primer is for large flat areas and when you can't do all of the painting in the proper time sequence. No-sand primer is so ideal because you don't have to wait and can get the job done in 2 hours.

ZnCr is a good primer. You don't need a second version on top of it. I don't know where this "light coat" or "dust coat" idea came from. Put 2 coats on 5 minutes apart like the label says. It shouldn't be so thick that it runs, but thick enough that you can't see grey aluminum thru it.

Throw the sandpaper away. Your motor has already been prepared.

Today's paints (acrylic enamels) are sooo improved over years ago. They are formulated with thixotropic agents so runs are greatly reduced. If you get runs its because you are pressing the button while pointing the spray can at the motor, you're overlapping too much, or you're holding the can in one place too long (need to keep the spray moving).

Practice on something else before you try it again.

Ok got it jim.Just the zc and paint.I have heard alot of people say just put a light dust coat on the metal just enough to cover the metal. But i will put 2 light coats on it and paint.Iwill put the after pics up as the before pics are here already.

Re: Paint question on motor and cowl

Well i finally got her painted up.It has taken almost 2 mths to get it done mostly due to weather but man it came out beautiful thanks to everyones help.I am going to post the after pics soon as now i just have to do the cowl monday and then put the decals and i'm done with paint. As far as the cowl i have heard 50/50 on weather to clear coat the cowl.I think i just may do that. The paint is drying super fast finally as it has warmed into the high 70's here is fl for like 2 straight weeks. What a differnce painting in the cold compared to when it is warm,no runs when it's warm and dries fast to recoat.Well more to come.
