Re: Paint Question

If you are dead set on rolling paint on..I suggest you look through these threads and see how they did it, and how it came out..

Is there something wrong with rolling paint on?

I still think it would be easier to start with a fresh cote of paint then it would be to sand and buff an old one out. You gotta remember that the paint has been on the boat for probably 30 some years...I'm sure ti could be done, but with a lot more time

Nope, not at all. Thats why I showed you those threads...they are both excellent examples of rolled on paint. And you may be right about putting a fresh coat of paint on, obvious if you want to change the color.
Good luck.

Re: Paint Question

I've used Brightside and it is great, but I just want to clarify one thing. Gelcoat is not paint, and it is waaaaaay more durable. That's why most of us are recommending sanding out if you can. There are reasons not to, and not liking the color is one of those. But very few of us would paint over gelcoat if it will clean up . . . ;)

Re: Paint Question

Reason I want to paint are:

1) not a fan of the color
2) 30-40 years old
3) trailer boat only used in fresh water
4) A lot more work getting the original color back

Thanks for you opinion on the paint!

Re: Paint Question

Plus today I sanded it down in a small place and took some mother fine cut wax and tried buffing...A small change but not much...

I understand the gel coat is a lot stronger, but a painted boat should last a few years of fresh water riding right? Or are you saying that its going to need to be repainted every season?

Re: Paint Question

Agree with ezmobee, but just wanted to confirm you understood the difference between gelcoat and paint. All good.

Re: Paint Question

I went over the boat to day with a sander and used 1000 grit....It didn't rough it up as well as I imagined....How much sanding is needed?

Should I start with a 300-400 and work my way up? or am I only sanding to take away the shine?

Re: Paint Question

You can get by with just scotch-brite pad and a good cleaner like Purple power. I painted my old station wagon that way. its 24 years old. Not worth a 1500 dollar paintjob. I am now ready to paint my 1964 boat with foam roller. It will be good enuf for a 800 dollar boat. There wasnt enuf gelcoat to buff. i could see thru it, to the glass.

Re: Paint Question

Re: Paint Question

Most single part paints recommend 320 - 400 prep . . . Between coats as well.

follow the instruction on the can, choose whatever paint you like, generally sand to knock the gloss off the surface, to be safe read the instructions on the paint can
