that is the question. to spray, all I would have to do is buy a gun, have everything else I need. Have no experience with either way of painting. Just looking for a best way for a novice to paint a boat. Any opinions?

I vote for spray. This may be a personal preference, though. I have done both on my project in progress and I had no experience really in either application. Spraying ended up providing the better finish and was the easier/quicker method for me.

I would say spray, unless you, like me, do not have a place to work that you can risk over-spray. I used the roll/tip method, successfully, and would do it again, but spraying is faster.

Re: paint, roll/tip or spray?

It depends on many things

It depends on how big the boat is 16' VS 30'

It depends on what paint your using as a one part has some safety concerns while a two part has huge safety issues when sprayed

It depends on your ability to supply a LOT of clean air to the spray gun

No matter which way you go mistakes will be made and you will learn to live with them or do twice :)

Having done both ways i will stick with roll & tip for two part paint

the boat is a 19ft duel console outboard. Havn't decided on paint yet. Was waiting to see how I applied it first before that decision was made. As far as air is concerned, I have a 30 gallon compressor that puts out 5.5 SCFM @ 90 PSI, and have a 80 gallon compressor at my disposal at my dads shop if my compressor is not good enough. As far as space, I have a heated shop at my disposal that's not afraid to get dirty, so thats not a prob.

How the shop is heated is kind of a big safety deal with spraying

didn't think about that. Its a recycled oil burner forced air. Has an exposed heating element thats gets air forced over it. Not shure if a red hot heating element is bad or not.

I'd roll it. It's a small boat so I don't think I'd bother spraying.

I rolled mine with help from Woodonglass page 10 of the "Flamingo" thread.

Man I don't know if it was just the perfect weather but yesterday I rolled a 25' sportcraft with a hardtop using Petit easypoxy instead of the interlux brightsides I'm using on my boat and it worked great!
