I did a search and most answers were over 2 years old,so I'm asking again.

I want to purchase a paint sprayer for home use. I have a finished basement that I want to repaint and will also use the sprayer for other assorted "home" maintenance. projects

I have an air compresser and some of the older answers mentioned HVLP type sprayers.

Anyone have updated suggestions?
Thanks

If you're running on Air,..... HVLP is Still the way to Go......

I bought a Gravity Feed earlier this year,.. A Real Cheapie.....Shot maybe 7/ 10 gal.s thru it last spring,.... No Problems,.... For Dumptrucks,+ such it was Fine.....

I've still got a couple of nice guns,.... Both gravity,+ siphon......
The gravity feed is more Balanced in your hand.......

For House Painting or shooting Latex,.... I've got an Old Wagener Power Painter that still works pretty good...... It doesn't mind throwing Heavy Stuff......

As always, I have to recommend Harbor Freight. They have like 50 different sprayers to choose from...most of them less than $25. As long as you're not painting a car, they'll do as good of a job as a $100+ sprayer.

last summer i bought a wagner paint crew and it works great for spraying latex. I painted my 24x48 house in about 2 1/2 hours.

The device that you get to spray latex is not going to do any good with other paints. I'm really surprised to hear that a Wagner Power Painter is worth a hoot. I had one of those obnoxious sounding things a bunch of years back and I ended up tossing it. It was absolutely worthless for latex.

I had teh graco XR7 (from home depot) and it works very very well.

Will spray most anything, except for the really thick stucco coating paints.

Loved it. $499 if I remember right.

I've gone ahead and ordered the following from Harbor Frieght 20 OZ. GRAVITY FEED SPRAY GUN and a HIGH VOLUME LOW PRESSURE (HVLP) SPRAY GUN Kit
I'll post results after I paint the basement. Wish me luck.
Thanks for the responses.

Great guns for many painting duties Tyme2fish but do not waste your time trying to spray latex with them. You'd have to thin the paint so much as to break it down.

That HVLP gun would be especially effective (and clean) for spraying alkyd enamel on any of your woodwork, trim and doors, but forget either for the latex.

There is a good reason why decent latex sprayers start at $500.00

I'll second that. We used them to repaint the inside of our stable several years ago. We had two. We would have the next one cleaned out and functioning just in time for the one in use to clog up. We repeated this all day and tossed them both when we were finished. Latex is tough...

OK, so what material will these sprayers I bought use? If not Latex, I think I just wasted $73.00. Will they work on oil base paints? Hey, I'm completely ignorant on paint sprayers.
Stain? Oilbase?

Re: Paint Sprayer for Home Use

If I understand correctly the spray gun you ordered is for spraying automotive style paints and similar finishes on relatively small surfaces. What you need is something entirely different. Even if the gun you ordered handled the materials you want to spray it would take quite a long time to get the job done.

If you have other uses for a sprayer I'd look at one of the Wagner power painters or similar products. They spray without the use of a compressor and will handle not only the materials you are likely to use but also the volume you need for your project.

If this is a one-time project look at renting an airless spayer like they use to paint houses with. I've used one and you can lay down a lot of paint in a hurry. I'd recommend using the sprayer to apply the material in sections, then backrolling before it sets or dries to work it in and provide a more uniform finish. This type of sprayer is designed to sit over a 5 gallon bucket of paint and has a long hose that leads to the sprayer head. It's just like spray painting but on a much larger scale.

Thanks, Terry Olson. Sounds like a plan.

Re: Paint Sprayer for Home Use

TTF: The HVLP gun will spray stain, oil based enamels, and urethane paints very well because they can be thinned up to the 10% or so that makes them spray well. It will be excellent for most applications around the house. It is not limited to small things, either. It will wet quite a large area once you learn how to adjust it. The only drawback, and considering how often it would occur I think it is acceptable, is the cup size. You'll just be filling up more if you choose to paint walls. So the short answer is that it will work, but not with latex paint.

my paint crew was like $150 with then had a $50 rebate on it so cost $100 or so. it worked great and cleaned up alot better than the inlaws power painter (major pain in the A$$). the power painters are also really loud. it also came with the roller attachment. I would send the ones you ordered back and get what you need to do the job.

Call me old fashioned BUT I never liked spraying in the house unless it was some kind of GIANT room

Between all the time it takes to protect from overspray and other prep I can just roll it and be done 

Re: Paint Sprayer for Home Use

I used my gravity feed gun with semi-gloss latex on the louvered doors. It was a slow process but I was pleased with the finish. Would not reccomend for a whole room.

I have a seething detestation of brushstrokes:p I won't let anyone put a brush to any woodwork in the house. Mine is brushstroke free house. I take the doors outside and spray then with oil base enamel, then I lightly mask and spray all the jams and base mouldings, using the same paint, with my HVLP gun.

I then just roll on the latex.

The beauty of the HVLP gun is that is has very low overspray. The siphon gun would chase you out of the house.
