How many actual types are there to use? I have a fiberglass boat, that was painted a while back and now I am wanting to add about a 16" strip all around the boat. I have already done the prep work, stripped the old paint lightly sanded, and now I am ready to buy. I did do a search above but I wasn't able to find what type is best to use. I know there are a couple of different types, so if someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it. I found a gallon on ebay that was lacquer for a good price, but it seemed to good to be true so I wasn't sure if that was the type I needed.

Re: Paint Types

Lacquer is Definitely Not what you want.....

I've had Great Luck on Several boats,... Both Glass,+ Aluminum,... With a 2 part Automotive Ureathane.......
NAPA's MSU brand to be exact......

I Spray,.... It goes on Beautifully,+ Looks Great.......
I've been using it both Above,+ Below the waterline on trailer boats, as well as dock boats,.....
No Problems At All.......

Figure around $100.00 @gallon..........

Re: Paint Types

Unless you have a very big boat, a 16" stripe won't take a gallon of paint. I haven't bought paint at NAPA for a while, but when I did you didn't need to get a full gallon.

If it's an above the water line stripe then either a 1 part or 2 part paint will work, the 2 part paint will just last longer and look better.

Shane2004,

You may want to take a look at the Pettit easypoxy, it is really good stuff, one part poly. I have been using it on my deck surfaces, so far so good. West Marine carries it. Also, West always has an overstock rack, I was in there today buying spreaders, almost walked out with some bottom paint.

Just a stripe 16". Should be able to get away with 1 - 2(at most) qt. Of course this depends on the length of the boat. I always think in terms of mine, 18'.

Just my .02

Peace.

Ed.

Re: Paint Types

Thanks for the help, I'm still confused on what is best to use but I guess I would rather over do it than paint it and it come off in a year. It sounds like the 2-part is a better longer lasting choice. Can I pick up the 2-part paint at NAPA....and can that be rolled on also?

Re: Paint Types

At NAPA you'll need a Paint Code,....You can pick 1 out of their books,... Or pick the color of Any Car....
They'll mix whatever you want,.....

I Guess you could Roll it on,..... I Always Spray........

And,.... It seems that $100. @ gallon paint might be High,.... by some of the posts........
I don't remember the exact costs,.....
I just figure about $100. @ gallon is from the time I pull out the Spraygun to when I put it away,......
Hardeners,... Thinners,... All that Stuff that it takes to Shoot a Gallon.........

Sorry for the confusion.......
