Well im getting ready in the next couple of weeks to start my full resto (1985 4winns 170horizon / open bow) and i will post lots of pics and will ask lots of questions too.. I know i'm far off from repainting the hull (paint is just old / worn and if i gonna do it im gonna try to do it all the way)but i like to be informed ahead of time on my projects.. My question is can you paint the exteriour of the hull and the top half with a automotive paint? There's alot of color hue's i like but not sure if they come in marine paint..

Re: Paint???

There are as many colors of marine paint as there are colors; i.e. if you want it, it's avail. Big factor is the condition of the substrate (the glass / gel beneath what will eventually be the painted surface). Also, re-gelcoating is an option. Lots of pro's and con's to each approach. Browse the forum to decide which is best for your application..

Hope this helps!

Re: Paint???

I used a DuPont base clear system on my boat, love it. I is a trailered boat, I wouldn't use automotive paint unless it is a trailered boat. You can start a lot of fights on here asking that question, lol!

Ayuh,.... 2-pt urethane, single stage automotive paints are the same paints as the 2-pt urethane, single stage marine paints....
Base coat/ clear coat automotive paints suck though...

I use Martin Seynor Prizim all the time,... Matter of fact, I'm top coating a hull today...
A Dock boat at that...

Re: Paint???

There are alot of large lakes with-in anywhere from 15min. to 2 hours away from me, so i love that its a trailered boat. There are some spider cracking on the hull and a lot of bigger scratches (wont buff out). Plus the paint is worn off at certain areas. And i thought about changing the color..As i get closer to that stage i'll read alot more here about this. Also would i want a HVLP gun or a standard spray gun?

Re: Paint???

I used good old rustoleum professional oil base acrylic enamel and added the Valspar Acrylic enamel hardener. Paint shines like the sun, hard as nails and went on smooth as glass. Check out page #10 in my My Flamingo thread, listed below, for formula and application details.

Your formula is exactly what i was looking for thanks..One more stupid question... Does anyone know of a website that i can see different paint schemes / colors on a boat? Only ones i can find are for racing boats.. I know they have them for cars and bikes..
