Painted v. chromate carburetor

Doing some research on getting my carb rebuilt. Found several rebuilders. My carb was originally the yellowish/green chromate protected. Chromate has come off. Rebuilders I am researching will either paint or re-chromate.

Does anyone have any thoughts or comments about which is better or is there really any difference? Thanks.

The chromate doesnt seem to protect the steel parts very well, I always paint marine carbs after I rebuild them, Tremclad or Rustolium seem to work ok.

Mine is painted black but will be getting a fresh coat of silver as i get the motor rebuilt.

The chromatic conversion process on carbs is typically done with Alodine 1201. It turns it a translucent gold color and is an excellent primer base for painting. If your rebuilder is on top of things he'll do the 1201 treatment and if you want, paint it but it's unecessary. There's plenty of Saltwater motors out there that have survived very well with just the Alodine conversion. If it's asthetics that your after then paint is nice touch.
