painting a aluminum hull

Hi, I have a 1953 Lone Star aluminum V hull.<br />I want to repaint it. it. What is the best way to remove the old paint, sanding, or with chemicals?<br />Thanks..................Johnny

How about both? Chemicals first, then sanding down whatever the paint remover doesn't take, and then sanding with a very fine-coarsed paper prior to new primer and new paint?

Why not just sand out the scratches and lightly sand over good paint. The good paint has a good bond to the Aluminum.
