Re: Painting a boat

for my knowledge.....
i know when i paint a car i can use a wet on wet system(sealer,flash time,basecoat,flash time,clear, then dry)(ppg,sherwin williams,dupont,etc)
no sanding in between unless there was a problem somewhere.
can i do the same with a boat that has gelcoat?
prep and clean, sealer, flash time ,paint and clear(depending of what paint i use of course)?

You should start your own thread and not HI-Jack this one.
Answer is NO this is not the way to do it! Rubbing compound and a buffer is the way to bring back the shine.

I would prime the gel with whatever primer the paint system you use recommends. After that you have to do whatever the paint system recommends for topcoating or Base/clear system .. I dont really understand the question I guess..

I thought you were gelcoating your boat?

I was thinking the same thing :) .

Re: Painting a boat

hey guys i purchased this gelcoat w/wax to use for my boat
https://www.fgci.com/buyproducts_catalog1.aspx
Part Number: 131829

i was wondering what this clear is for. can i use it to go over the gelcoat for a shine? thats what i was told by the paint distributor.
https://www.fgci.com/buyproducts_catalog1.aspx?thePage=search&someStr=86-100150
Part Number: 125978

This Interior gel ? https://www.fgci.com/buyproducts_catalog1.aspx?thePage=search&someStr=131829

I personally do not like using Waxed anything product. I only use wax for bilge or compartment coatings ( and I add the waxsol myself ).

Clear is crap .. you dont need it nor want it ..

I only use clear gel to help in spot gel repairs ( basically to keep the pigment/gel ratio on par ).

You need Patch aid and/or PVA for full sprays of gel.

I hope this helps :) .

im sorry YD but i dont understand. the interior gel i purchased i cannot use for painting the entire boat?(funny the distributor i bought this from told me i could and if i want to really shine without sanding or buffing i could lay the clear over the gelcoat once it flashes.)

the clear is crap because of....?

is the clear gel supposed to be similar to automotive clear coat? or is it just gelcoat that is clear?

if im painting the boat with gelcoat how exactly do i use patch aid or pva? isnt it used for making molds?
to be honest i dont even know what that is.

what gelcoat am i supposed to be buying for full paint? what do you recommend?
this is what i want my boat to look like after its painted/gelcoated.

Yes you can use it.. it was more of a reference of the gel you were talking about. Your link didnt goto a specific product and I had to look it up via the part number.. just wanted to make sure we were looking at the same gel :) .

EDIT: your distributor either does not know what he is talking about with the no sand bang your done clearcoating.. or he knows more then us that does it for a living. You will have to wetsand and buff to rid yourself of orange peel.

the clear is crap because of....?

Its normally used for flake boats or blending repairs. Its not needed for overall coats. I would rather use Duratec clear additive then use clear gel.

is the clear gel supposed to be similar to automotive clear coat? or is it just gelcoat that is clear?

Its just clear gelcoat with UV additives.

if im painting the boat with gelcoat how exactly do i use patch aid or pva? isnt it used for making molds?
to be honest i dont even know what that is.

Nope. Patch aid is an additive that eliminates the use of wax or pva ( yes pva is a mold release agent .. but we would use it as a surfacing agent like wax )

You would add patch aid to your gel in about a 25% ratio gel/PA. As far as PVA .. you would spray that on after the gel has tacked up enough not to crater when applied.

what gelcoat am i supposed to be buying for full paint? what do you recommend?
this is what i want my boat to look like after its painted/gelcoated.

You can use your Ferro .. in fact I used to use that stuff all the time down in FL. I just dont like removing the wax after its cured. Were as pva you just wash off with water ( or have a contest with your friends to see how big of a peel you can get kinda like sunburned skin peeling ;) ).

Hope this helps some :)

Re: Painting a boat

yeah...you can scuff over gellcoat.....i hit at 280. i have seen jobs hit at 120, but i dont like them.....watch out for the reaction from wax....when you scuff......you actuallly have to sand the gell so the wax is out or it will alligate or your orange peel will be huge

Can you use Compound on new paint and wax it to keep the shine?
