Painting a motor??

I have read a bunch of post's where people were painting there motors. I am at that point where I am about ready to do that. Are there any links or threads that go in a lot of detail about painting motors? Also, when I do paint, I wanted to clean under the "block"... lots of dirt and crap there. Is it ok to spray it with a degreeser (after electronics are removed) and then a presure washer or something and let the water run down the foot? will it hurt it or drain out?

thanks

Re: Painting a motor??

I use engine degreaser all the time. It seems to work pretty good and I use a small throw away type paint brush to help the degreaser in those little hard to get places. I also use a steam cleaner after the degreaser. I've not used a pressure washer but I'd say it's ok as long as you protect the intake opening and the ignition components. Any water running down inside the exhaust housing won't hurt a thing.

I've used a pressure washer several times but be aware that it can remove paint as well as grime.

yeah, i kinda want to remove all the old paint, primer it, then paint the whole thing. How hard is it to remove the block from the foot? I think that it would look a whole lot better if it is taken apart as far as I can get it, strip it, then paint it real good. Any idea's or suggestions?

I'm painting mine as well, but during a complete rebuild, so I'll have it down to the bare bits which will make painting fairly easy. I'll have them properly cleaned and primed for painting, and thanks to Peter at nymarine, I also have the original colour my motor was painted with in the 60s.

Sounds like you're starting to walk down that path, which would be my suggestion - no point in doing something 3/4 of the way.

Do you have the service manual specific to your motor? Worth it's weight in gold if you are going to be taking it apart, even if you are good with motors.

Good luck, and can't wait to see the finished product.

generally, it's hard to get paint to stick second time around, if there is a reason it's coming off in the first place, so consider how it may look worse if it doesn't work. be sure to use the right primer for your metals.

And if you are talking about painting inside the cowl, I'm not sure why take the time and trouble?

Re: Painting a motor??

Just Finsihed Mine, 99 225 OP, completly disassembled, sanded 300, 600, 800 grits, used 2 cans of Zinc Chromate primer on my aluminum parts left my Cowl/hood just sanded no primer, I used Duplicolor Paint shop paint in quart cans (bright silver Met.) used Gravity fed Gun from Harbor Freight- 1.4 tip, 4 coats base (1 light 2 medium 1 mist-to even out the Met.) 6 coats clear (1st coat light rest Med) 1 quart of base was used, 2 Quarts of clear, this was a Laquar base, but worked well , little soft for the first 15-20 days, finished it off with a mild wet sand 1500 then a 2000 grit, used 3M heavy duty rubbing compound then a polish, ordering up my repro Decals for $40, this was alot of work but man she is beautiful and has a hard Factory like finish now, well worth the effort and time, she just looks like a Honda though! SO man just take your time, primer her right, paint her with love, and she'll look beautiful for ya!

Wow. I wish I lived in a climate that would allow for 6 clear coats!

Got any pictures? I'd love to see the finished product.
